Level 3+ opportunities Some Level 3+ opportunities will be associated with specific assignments/assessments. Others, like those listed below, are associated with general 6th grade units or relevant topics.
These Level 3+ opportunities can only be turned in if all other work for the quarter has been turned in. (They are not a substitute for assigned curricular expectations.)
Is there a topic of interest that you would like to demonstrate higher order thinking with that is related to something we've been studying? Don't hesitate to ask if it would be appropriate for a Level 3+. (Please ask before beginning if you want credit. I have to be able to link it to a unit we've been studying and it must contain information that wouldn't already be covered.)
All work MUST include citations (bibliography) for credit. Credit is usually awarded at the end of the quarter.
6th grade Level 3+ opportunities (to be done during or after applicable unit, and before end of quarter):
Write a report/prepare a presentation telling how a current event relates to something we've studied in class but we haven't discussed the current event in class. Be sure to include the source/date of the current event.
Create a chart listing at least 6 map projections, what they look like, and what they are particularly good for/who uses them
Do a report/prepare a presentation on the career of being a cartographer (map-maker)
Do a report/prepare a presentation on the National Geographic Society (history, goals, etc.)
Do a written or oral report/presentation on how historians believe language developed
Explain the history of the Rosetta Stone
Do a report, presentation, or model on how GPS works
Read Longitude : the true story of a lone genius who solved the greatest scientific problem of his time (by Dava Sobel, in OG's library) and prepare a paper/poster/presentation showing what you learned
Do a report/prepare a presentation on how paper is made from papyrus
Report/prepare a presentation on how the Suez Canal was built
Do a report/prepare a presentation on how silk is made
Do a report/prepare a presentation on the excavation of the Terra Cotta Army
Do a biographical report/prepare a presentation on the life of Siddartha Gautama
Research the history of the image of the Buddha; what is some of the symbolism (mudras)?
Rewrite 10 sayings of Confucius for modern times. Or, create 10 new things Confucius might have said if he lived today. BOTH MUST FIT HIS SPIRIT.
Research the symbolism of the architecture or the sculptures on federal buildings in Washington, DC; write a paper or make a powerpoint presentation.
Report/prepare a presentation on the Three Gorges Dam and its effect on China.
Research and write on paper or powerpoint what happened with Augustus' daughter that she was exiled
Do a report/prepare a presentation on the history of the events included in the Olympics
Do a report/prepare a presentation on the history of females competing in the Olympics
Do a report/prepare a presentation on the use of elephants as a strategy of war (see p. 440 in textbook (World History: Ancient Civilizations))
Unfortunately, there are several important people in Greek history that we will not be able to study in-depth. You may prepare a powerpoint presentation on any one of the following. Include the time s/he lived, and his/her major contributions (why s/he is famous). You do not need to include parents, spouse, children, education, etc. unless they had a major role in his/her development. Use your own words (don't just copy and paste). Don't forget your "Works Cited" page for text and images.
